Is My Child Ready To Potty Train?

Potty training is a major milestone. The success of potty training hinges on physical and emotional readiness not a specific age. The true secret to success is timing and “Patience”!
As a parent ask yourself these Questions:

• Does your child seem interested in the potty, toilet or in wearing underwear?
• Can your child understand and follow basic directions?
• Does your child tell you with words, facial expressions or posture when he or she needs to go?
• Does your child stay dry for periods of 2 hours or longer during the day?

If you answered yes to these questions your child might be ready, if you answered mostly no you might want to wait. When you decide it’s time to begin potty training set your child up for success. Start with a positive attitude, be patient, be creative and you must have a dash of humor! Also include your child’s early childhood program to bridge home and school, consistency is very important.

Create a routine, give lots of praise and consider incentives. Some examples; stickers, a trip to the park or extra bedtime stories. This is where being “Creative” comes in.
Believe it or not, when your child is mentally and physically ready to learn this new skill, they will! You BOTH will have earned a pat on the back with this accomplishment.
